■KAOMISE ~ A great KABUKI performance ~
‘The festive KAOMISE Production’ known as ‘Kichirei Kaomise Kōgyō’ is one of the most traditional and spectacular kabuki events in Kyoto.
In the Edo Period, ‘KAOMISE’ (‘face-showing’) originally referred to the month in which a theatre showed the actors who were newly contracted for the following year to the audience. Today it is an all-star production and a big event for December in Kyoto.
This month’s performances will commemorate the Name Succession of Nakamura Shikan VIII and his three sons, Nakamura Hashinosuke IV, Nakamura Fukunosuke III and Nakamura Utanosuke IV.
The program will feature some of Kabuki’s most famous actors, including those designated as Living National Treasures. Please be sure not to miss this special event that people living in Kyoto, and all over Japan, look forward to!
