Samurai Kembu Theater - Traditional Swordplay and Performance

“Kembu (Gin’ei-kenshibu)” is a traditional Japanese stage performance art that utilizes the Katana (traditional Japanese sword) and Japanese fan while expressing the poems that were mostly written by samurai. With the mission of re-introducing traditional bushi warrior culture (bushido, the way of warriors) into society, Samurai Kembu Co. has been making this performing art available for everyone to enjoy. It has also been using kembu to help visitors familiarize themselves with the traditional Japanese culture, so they can discover the “old and new” at the same time. At their main studio ‘Samurai Kembu Theater’ (Kyoto city), various wellness programs are offered, including “Kembu Lesson” (short workshop session to learn authentic kembu), and “Demonstration Show” (kembu masters’ demonstration of swordplay). The Kembu Lesson provides detailed instructions in English and offers photo session for visitors with a wide variety of costumes to choose from. In the “Demonstration Show,” visitors can enjoy a 1-hour kembu stage show performed by seasoned masters with detailed explanations. Through authentic kembu, visitors will not only gain first-hand experience of Japanese values and the spirituality of bushi culture, but also a time of enrichment.
